Those working in the field are passionate about relieving the suffering of others but often neglect their own health. These short practices are an invitation to replenish the passion of healthcare work and douse the flickering flames of burnout. Drawing on her background as both a physician and a Zen teacher, in Mindful Medicine, Jan Chozen Bays offers accessible mindfulness practices specifically designed to support health professionals of all kinds. Jan Chozen Bays, MD is a pediatrician, Zen teacher, wife, mother, and grandmother. She has studied and practiced Zen since 1973 and is a board member and participant of Mindful Medicine, a nonprofit offering mindfulness groups and retreats to healthcare providers in the Portland, Oregon, area. Dr. Bays worked for thirty years at Legacy Children’s Hospital in outpatient pediatrics and as a specialist in child abuse cases. She is the co-abbot of the Great Vow Zen Monastery and helped found Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple. She is the author of How to Train a Wild Elephant, Mindfulness on the Go, The Vow-Powered Life, Mindful Eating, Mindful Eating on the Go, and Jizo Bodhisattva. Laura Jomon Martin has been practicing Zen since 2004 and in 2016 was made a Dharma Holder. Her career has been in social work since 1993, primarily in community mental health, and she is currently an LCSW in private practice, and a teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, certified through University of Massachusetts Medical School.
