After Jason Wyngarde succeeded in turning Jean Grey - possessed by the Phoenix entity - into the Hellfire Club's Black Queen, the X-Men were captured. That is, all but one of them. Wolverine is considered dead, but then the immortal mutant with adamantium claws plunges out of the sewer and takes on the Club's guards. His mission is clear: to save his friends.
