This woman’s story is deeply emotional and powerful - involving betrayal, drug trafficking set-up, wrongful imprisonment, childbirth in chains, and losing her children. In 2011, this woman was pregnant with her second child when her husband, who lives in Malaysia, asked her to come for better treatment. He told her he bought her a "nice bag" for the journey — a big one that his friend would deliver. She found hair attachments and CDs inside and questioned it. He said it was for business. At the airport in Malaysia, she was searched - and found with three bags of drugs hidden in the bag. She was beaten and tortured, and despite knowing nothing about the drugs, she was thrown into prison. She spent 4 years awaiting judgment until her sentence came: death by hanging. It was only through the intervention of President Obama’s visit to Malaysia that her sentence was reduced to life imprisonment. She gave birth in prison — in handcuffs. She sent the baby back to Nigeria, where her family raised the child. But after all her suffering and eventual release in 2013, her husband and his family snatched the children away.
