We settle for less than we deserve not because we don’t know our worth, but because our mind has learned to equate wanting more with risk. From a CBT perspective, this comes from core beliefs like “I’m not enough” or “If I ask for more, I’ll lose what I have.” These beliefs create automatic thoughts that sound reasonable — “At least it’s something,” “I shouldn’t be difficult,” “This is safer.” Over time, those thoughts produce fear and guilt, which keep us in situations that don’t truly meet our needs. CBT explains that when we challenge these thoughts instead of accepting them as facts, the cycle begins to break. Small changes in behavior — speaking up, setting a boundary, or walking away, teach the brain that choosing yourself isn’t dangerous. You don’t stop settling because life suddenly changes; life changes because you stop believing you have to settle.
