This is James Eric Myers' and my original rework of the old plantation hymn "Were You There", adding a new refrain to verse 1 and 2 only. The original was likely composed by enslaved African-Americans in the 19th century. I've always found it incredibly moving in it's original form. But rather than just covering the old song, we have tried to create a new song that reminds us to more deeply consider the cost of the Cross of Christ. Avoiding the "empty tomb" celebration for now, we hope this song allows the listener to dwell for a while on the cost of the Cross. After all, the Cross is not just a gift to us from God, it is also what is required of us by God. (Matthew 16:24) We think it would fit well in any Good Friday Easter service. “Were You There?
