Dozens of French farmers blocked major highways near Lyon on Monday, deploying tractors to protest against the European Union’s Mercosur trade agreement, which is expected to be signed in Paraguay on January 12. Protesters claimed the deal would expose French agriculture to unfair competition from imports produced under lower standards. Serge Genevay, a grain farmer and member of Rural Coordination, described the signing as “a publicity stunt” and said France “no longer has control over defending its farmers.” The agreement, negotiated over 25 years, would eliminate most tariffs over 15 years across a market of roughly 780 million people.
