Punchen Himal climb, via Tsum valley. Nepal, Himalayas.

This shows our trek and climb starting at 700m and finishing at 5,962m. We started on the Manaslu circuit and then went through the remote Tsum valley, with acclimaisation on smaller peaks near the Tibet border. We then completed the second ever ascent of North Punchen Himal (5,962m), (by a new route). My particular thanks to Andy Hemingway, Karma Sherpa and Dende Sherpa for being such great team mates and companions on this expedition. Also my thanks to Mr. Bodha Raj Bhandari (Chairman of Snowy Horizon Treks and Expeditions) for superbly organising the permits, transport and all other logistics of this expedition Our trek up and back down the Tsum valley enabled us to experience its strong Buddhist heritage. This, as well as meeting the local people was a rich and unforgettable cultural experience. Similarly it was a delight to see so much wildlife relatively close-up. Like all mountaineers we were of course awestruck by the sparkling array of magnificent peaks in the Tsum region, many of them unclimbed. The expedition took place during 16 April – 5 May 2017. We thank the BMC for providing a grant toward this expedition. Finally, and most importantly, we thank the people of Nepal who warmly welcomed us to their beautiful country and helped in so many ways with our expedition.
