With over 7 million children involved, America’s child welfare system is overwhelmed. But it’s not just a government issue — it’s a community one. Here’s how grassroots efforts are creating meaningful change for children in the system, and in many cases, keeping them out of it. For more stories, ideas, and advice from changemakers tackling our biggest challenges, subscribe to Stand Together ► / standtogethercc — America's child welfare system is facing a crisis of unprecedented scale, affecting over seven million children. Each year, hundreds of thousands enter foster care, with alarming statistics that reveal the troubling impact the system has on children: 90% of children experience severe trauma, 81% face incarceration at some point in their lives, and 25% attempt suicide. This system, intended to protect vulnerable children, has instead become a pipeline to some of society's most intractable and paralyzing issues, including sex trafficking, poverty, addiction, and incarceration. So how did we get here? Well… it’s complicated. A staggering 76% of child welfare cases stem from allegations of neglect, often stemming from poverty rather than abuse or abandonment. This connection highlights the urgent need for a more holistic approach to family support with a goal of reducing initial referrals to the system in the first place. Especially when the system grapples with a 50% turnover rate among foster families within the first six months, further destabilizing the care provided to vulnerable children. In this episode of Stand Together Investigates, we explore the frontlines of America's child welfare crisis, speaking with three groundbreaking groups who believe this complex issue is solvable. Learn about innovative solutions like CarePortal, an app connecting families with community support across 35 states, National Angels, operating in 19 cities to wrap support and resources around children in foster care and the foster families caring for them, and the Family Justice Law Center, fighting for families unfairly treated by the system. These grassroots initiatives, along with legal advocacy to address inappropriate removals, offer promising avenues for reform. Could these community-driven approaches be the key to not only transforming the child welfare system but also tackling broader societal issues like incarceration, homelessness, and youth mental health crises? Watch as we uncover how these bottom-up solutions are already making a difference, potentially paving the way for stronger, more resilient communities nationwide. — Watch more videos about the people working to heal American families and children in our Strong and Safe Communities playlist ► • Strong & Safe Communities And visit Stand Together’s website to learn more ► https://standtogether.org/
