Lakhinagar is presently the largest Manipuri village in the Sarupathar Sub-division of Golaghat District, Assam, with more than five hundred households. The village was originally pioneered for settlement in 1975 by six brave Meitei individuals. It lies between the Rengmai River and the Doyang River, along the border of Assam and Nagaland. Blessed with fertile land, the area gradually attracted many poor Manipuri (Meitei) families from different parts of Assam, Nagaland, Tripura and other places, who migrated here in search of livelihood. Through hard work and perseverance, many of them have been able to build stable and prosperous lives. I stayed in the village on the nights of 1 and 2 March 2026 and had the opportunity to observe the remarkable transformation it has undergone since my first visit in 2008 and my subsequent visit in 2011.
