(2 Sep 2000) Serbo-Croat/Nat XFA President Slobodan Milosevic's main challenger in upcoming national elections promised Friday to promote ethnic harmony and stop Yugoslavia's deterioration if elected. Vojislav Kostunica, a 56-year-old law professor whose presidential candidacy in the Sept. 24. vote is backed by most of Serbia's opposition parties, pledged to "stop further decline of our people and state," which is impoverished after more than a decade of Milosevic's rule. Kostunica's speech marks the beginning of his election campaign, which comes amid increased government repression and fears of election rigging by Milosevic. Earlier on Friday, he officially submitted his candidacy at the Yugoslav Federal Parliament.
