(18 Jan 2021) Pakistan has started reopening schools in phases after about two months of closure despite a steady increase in infections and fatalities from the coronavirus. Authorities said in the first phase, classes for senior grade students will reopen, while junior class will be reopened from February 1st. At the True Care Academy school in Karachi, students sanitized their hands as they entered the school and and washed their hands before beginning class. In class students were sitting spaced apart and required to wear face masks. Teacher, Faiza Khan, called on the government to keep schools open despite concern over a possible second wave of the virus. "We have already lost education, the students are coming here with blank minds, I think that students did not get any learning through online courses," Khan said. Students also said they wanted to remain in school to study for upcoming examinations. Pakistan has reported 10,997 deaths from the coronavirus among 521,211 cases since February, when the first case was detected in the country. Pakistan’s drug regulatory authority has approved the use of Oxford-AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine and the government is trying to make it available by the first quarter of the year.
