Listen to Lawrence Hendra on this recently discovered work, which is part of a series of allegorical representations of the ‘Four Continents’ undertaken by Rosalba Carriera in c.1720. The work is one of the highlights of Philip Mould & Company's presentation at Frieze Masters 2023. Carriera's ‘Four Continents’ personify the then-perceived cultural attributes of their respective parts of the world. She was the most celebrated European pastelist of the early eighteenth century. Her technical experimentation and virtuoso handling helped transform pastel into a medium celebrated for its subtlety of tone and rich colour. The present work will be included in Dr. Xavier Salomon’s forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.
