The old saying goes that if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck, its probably a duck, right? Well, this all new carbide tank might say it’s the microcell polymer, whatever that means, but it sure looks and sounds like a urethane kind of duck. Either way, the engine inside of this mysterious coverstock is the tried and true gear core most notably featured in the venom shock. The 4.5 x 5 x 4.5 2LS layout is just about the most vanilla layout I could put on this piece. To be completely honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect as the core dynamics are more than most urethane options, and out of the box, this piece had a ton of surface, so I just decided to go right up the middle and see what kind of results I could get. And on the lanes, I got, well, results that were right up the middle as well. Now, to be fair, its extremely rare that I would ever use something this dull on a house shot. At this point, it is basically unnecessary to have that much friction generated from the cover on a high ratio condition. But even with that caveat, the carbide tank was close in many different parts of the lane and most of my success was just dependent on me doing the right thing with my hand which had to vary based on the area I was in. But in all reality, as I moved around and tried different things, the carbide tank just did what I would expect a strong, dull urethane-ish ball to do. With that, I decided to hit it with a 4000 pad just to see if I could get a little more pop downlane and that lasted for a short while, but the reality is that this piece has a specific place in a tournament arsenal. If you’re looking for a ball that is a go-to for your league night, there is only one way I can see that being a good idea which I’ll get to in a minute. But for a tournament arsenal, this combined with the Ripcord launch could be a deadly 1-2 pairing for shorter, especially lower volume conditions. When the lanes allow or even require you to keep your angles in front of you, this Carbide Tank will shine much, much brighter than its very dull cover. So with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. For the house bowler, the only time I see this being a solid option is for the low speed player. I think the more senior players will get some good use out of this ball when they have to combat the cliff of a heavy volume house shot. But the most ideal match up for this piece is the competitive bowler. The guy or gal that is out there every weekend on a variety of challenging conditions trying to compete at the highest level. That’s where the most value will be found with this piece. So even though the all new Carbide Tank might not be the right piece for everyone all the time, In the right hands, this gray beast is sure to run a blitzkrieg over your competition.
