A series of severe nosebleeds, dismissed as nothing more than a typical nosebleed by a local hospital, prompted Mrs. Carolyn Dennis to seek help at Mayo Clinic. When Mrs. Dennis arrived at Mayo Clinic, her blood pressure was dropping and she was in critical condition. She had a history of a very challenging tumor of the head and neck. The combination of the tumor, surgery and radiation weakened the walls of tissue and left her artery exposed, creating a potentially fatal leak in a very challenging location. Through the expert care of Bernard Bendok, M.D. and the technology available in the intraoperative MRI suite, Mrs. Dennis underwent a successful cerebral angiogram to reinforce the artery through the placement of two stents. For the first time in surgical and health care history, technology allows the combined layering of cellular imaging, fluorescence imaging, augmented reality and virtual reality for optimal accuracy and efficacy of surgery. This precision surgery was made possible by a generous gift that established the Burke Image-Guided Operating Suite.
