Traffic accidents involving livestock can quickly become chaotic and dangerous. That’s why the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation hosted a series of Bovine Emergency Response Plan (BERP) trainings to prepare first responders for incidents involving livestock transport. The one‑day sessions, held across Virginia, brought together law enforcement, firefighters, EMS personnel, veterinarians and animal control officers to learn critical skills for managing these unique emergencies. Participants received instruction from animal science experts, livestock veterinarians and Virginia Cooperative Extension specialists on topics such as scene safety, livestock handling, animal welfare, transportation hazards and biosecurity. Training also covered building an effective response team and making informed decisions about containment, extraction and, when necessary, euthanasia. The program included a hands‑on practicum where attendees observed cattle behavior and examined the interior of a double‑decker livestock trailer to better understand how animals are transported. Instructors emphasized the value of pre‑incident planning and having qualified personnel ready to assist when livestock are involved in roadway accidents. This highlight video captures how BERP training empowers first responders to improve public safety, protect animal welfare and respond more confidently when livestock transport accidents occur.
