Even more people these days are showing off their talents online. These four professional saxophone players post a video to Instagram every week with a different song and in a different location every time. They’ve played the jingles for supermarkets and convenience stores while standing outside. They also make saxophone versions of trending songs. With their content, they hope to bring classical music out of the concert hall and into people’s lives. Melodious notes ring crisp and bright from their saxophones as these two young men practice. They are half of a quartet called “Post a Little Sax Every Week.” It might sound like a joke, but it’s not quite as it seems. The four hold their glittering saxophones as they stand outside of shops, playing each one’s jingle. They’re popular online, and even jump onto musical trends. All four are music school graduates, ranging from 22 to 28 years old. It started out as seniors pulling in underclassmen to form a quartet. They mix creativity with technical skill, getting a million views on Instagram in just a month. Chen Wei-lun Quartet member Chang-han called me and asked if I wanted to be in a quartet. Why a quartet? I don’t know. With whom? I don’t know. Just come over tomorrow. OK. Count me in. Huang Chang-han Quartet member For those of us who come from music school and play classical saxophone music, it’s hard to keep doing in Taiwan. So we figured we’d try playing some songs people like. At first, when we were setting up our instruments to play on the street, we were a little bit shy. Chen Wei-lun Quartet member We finished playing outside, and there were four or five people on bikes who shouted that it was great. In their regular lives, some of them work as music teachers and others are studying abroad. So whenever they get together, they make a few videos at a time. Even if there’s just one of them, they’ll take the chance to shoot a video. Yu-hao, who’s studying in Japan, went to the Premier12 baseball championship in Tokyo. While others brought noisemakers inside, he brought his sax. Kuo Yu-hao Quartet member I took a video playing the fight song outside of Tokyo Dome and posted it on our account. I only got the sheet music that day, so when everyone else was making noise, I was looking at the music and couldn’t watch the game. Was kind of a bummer. Following the notes, these musicians are burning with creativity and passion to bring their love for classical music to the world.
