A playthrough on level 1 of Sid Meier's Chopper Rescue, published by MicroProse for the Atari 400/800 in 1982. MicroProse founders Bill Stealey, ex–Air Force pilot turned businessman, and Sid Meier, a soft-spoken programmer, had struck gold with their first release, Hellcat Ace. Built quickly for the Atari 8-bit line, it was a simple air combat game that managed to capture just enough of the thrill of dogfighting to resonate with a growing community of home computer owners. Meier followed up fast. The second project, Chopper Rescue, pointed in a different direction. Where Hellcat Ace carried the seeds of the serious simulations that would later define MicroProse, Chopper Rescue was pure arcade-style action, a game that spoke to the coin-op culture of the early 1980s. Chopper Rescue tasked players with piloting a small helicopter through treacherous caverns and hostile terrain, dodging anti-aircraft fire while attempting to rescue stranded men. The design leaned on fast reflexes, tight controls, and a looping gameplay structure familiar to anyone who had spent time in the arcade. A two-player mode was available, which let player one control the chopper and the second shoot and drop bombs. Contemporary reviewers likened it to the likes of Defender or Choplifter, high-pressure action games where survival depended on both precision and nerve. But while Chopper Rescue delivered on immediacy, it didn’t have the same staying power as Hellcat Ace. Sales were modest, and the game was quickly overshadowed by the company’s later titles.
