Michael First, M.D., Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, speaks at TC in a class taught by Phillip Saigh, Professor of Psychology and Education. First, a nationally and internationally recognized expert on psychiatric diagnosis and assessment, will discuss the controversy surrounding the recently published fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which was heavily criticized by many in the field for changing certain long-standing ways of measuring psychopathology. Dr. First was the Editor of the DSM-IV-TR, the Editor of Text and Criteria for DSM-IV, the DSM-IV Primary Care Version. He was co-principal investigator on the "Future of Psychiatric Diagnosis" conferences that developed research agendas for DSM-V and was director of the DSM-V Prelude Project. He is a current consultant to the World Health Organization on the ongoing 11th revision of The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). The talk is part of an ongoing series organized by Saigh and Marla Brassard, Professor of Psychology and Education, for TC's School Psychology program.
