The prelude from BWV 997 suite represents a part of Bach's small but far from unimportant opus for lute solo. While we lack a direct autograph from Bach, our closest sources are from his students Agricola and Kirnberger (the inomplete lute tablature is attributed to Weyrauch). Prelude as the opening movement leads the listener into the suite Bach composed during his Leipzig years, probably influenced by his encounter with Sylvius Leopold Weiss, the famous lutenist. As Bach himself was more familiar with keyboard instruments, he presumably wrote the suite for an instrument combining both - the lute-harpsichord, a keyboard instrument attempting to emulate the sound of the lute. The c minor prelude opens the suite almost improvisationally - a stark contrast to the fugue that follows. __________ Matej Berlot is a Slovenian guitarist studying in Vienna at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst. The recording is a result of a summer 2024 project with Resonant Connections Media and luthier Steven den Toom, whose guitar "Frieda" is featured in this video. https://www.instagram.com/the.running... / 1hutomzdzy Audio and video production by Michael Ibsen.
