Ten years ago this January I managed to get the keys to a bunker. I had been looking for a space to build a lab; a space with enough room to start new projects, invite people to collaborate on music, visual art, live performances, live streaming, and any other idea that might come along. One of the ideas I wanted to try was getting a vinyl cutting machine, a lathe, to make vinyl records in-house. I liked the DIY approach; it gave me a sense of freedom. I saw it as a way to document the things that happened in the lab, through small runs of vinyl records. I loved the idea of being able to bypass the whole label planning process and cut music to vinyl on the same day it was recorded. Over the years, many sessions and collaborations have been added to the archive this way, exclusively on limited vinyl. Fast forward ten years, and many of those initial ideas have come to fruition. STOOR Live, Stay Home Soundsystem, Knob Twiddlers Hangout, and Pink Noise have all unfolded nicely, thanks to the involvement and energy of a growing circle of collaborators. This year the focus is on further developing the vinyl cutting and custom packaging ideas that have been evolving over time. New music is currently taking shape in the studio, with a series of releases planned for the coming months. To kick off this new series of releases, I’m re-releasing the first two records ever to come out of the STOOR project: S1 and S2, the first two editions of the vinyl archive. At the time they were intentionally released under the obscure alias JPG, with only 50 copies made. Now they are being re-released as Speedy J, digitally and on vinyl. The vinyl editions come in the classic STOOR vinyl archive packaging: each hand-numbered copy housed in 450gsm sleeves with magnetic flaps and an info pocket, complemented by anti-static, anti-dust audiophile inner sleeves.
