In the early days of internet communication, using a painfully slow dial-up modem and simple IRC chats, I was contacted for the first time by someone from beyond the former communist bloc, where I had already lived for 22 years. He was a young man from Kuala Lumpur, blind, and—like me—the owner of a Roland XP50 workstation. He asked for help navigating, step by step, through the labyrinth of buttons and menus of the synthesizer. Sometimes we talked about our worlds. He lived in the Klang Valley, one of the most densely populated and culturally diverse regions of Malaysia. Those conversations awakened my curiosity about a culture shaped by layered traditions and religions. With very limited resources at the time, mostly imagination and what little I had read, this song began to take shape in my mind, sometime around 1995—an imaginary world inspired by a very real human connection. Initially I thought, let's make a metaphorical Rojak: a local spicy salad from the Klang Valley, a mix of fruits and vegetables that apparently shouldn't go together, but which create a unique taste. So... with some references inspired by Chinese and Indian movies I saw as a child, along with traditional Malay instruments - at least in spirit, some instruments being recreated on the synthesizer, I began my imaginary journey. But things somehow got more complex. The piece emerged from my immersion in a musical space where I understood that emotion can fully exist without physical expression. During its creation, I felt intense inner states, carried inside a dissolved shell - invisible or irrelevant to the eye, so, thanks to the fox from the story of The Little Prince and the chance to meet a blind man from the other side of the world with a fantastic desire to express what he cannot see through music, the title "Invisible to the Eyes" was born. So... close your eyes and keep it inside!
