Aesthetic Surgery Journal May 2022 Issue Highlights w/Dr Foad Nahai

In our May issue of ASJ, I’ve selected two Original Articles with Commentaries from the Breast Surgery and Aesthetic Genital Plastic Surgery sections, an Original Article from the Cosmetic Surgery section, and a Special Topic from the Body Contouring section. Don’t miss this month’s Podcast Series from the Breast Surgery section: “Adverse Events of Nonablative Lasers and Energy-Based Therapies in Subjects with Fitzpatrick Skin Phototypes IV-VI: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.” I also invite you to listen to the monthly ASJ Open Forum podcast series here. I’ll see you next month and thanks for joining our conversations on Instagram in ASJ and ASJ Open Forum. Breast Surgery Identification of Factors Predictive for Patient Reported Outcomes in the Prospective Australian Breast Device Registry Authors: Jessy Hansen, MEpi; Susannah Ahern, MBBS, PhD, FRACMA; Pragya Gartoulla, PhD; Ying Khu, BHRM; Elisabeth Elder, MBBS, PhD, FRACS; Colin Moore, MBBS, FRACS; Gillian Farrell, MBBS, FRACS; Ingrid Hopper, MBBS, PhD, FRACP ; and Arul Earnest, MSc, PhD Commentary by: Bruce W. Van Natta, MD In this Level 2 International Original Article from Australia Dr. Jessy Hanson and colleagues identified how PROMs can assist with device monitoring through benchmarked outcomes that track device performance. They remind us to consider demographic and clinical factors. A Commentary by Dr. Bruce Van Natta indicates this work represents a meaningful improvement in data analysis for implants that should allow surgeons to pinpoint and treat the causation of increasingly complex procedures and optimize pa¬tient outcomes. Cosmetic Medicine Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging of the Tear Trough: Lessons Learned From Functional Anatomy Authors: Mariana Calomeni, MD; Michael G. Alfertshofer ; Konstantin Frank, MD;Nicholas Moellhoff, MD; Rebekah Dennison, BS; Bruna Bravo, MD ; Leonie Schelke, MD, PhD; Peter Velthuis, MD, PhD; Jeremy B. Green, MD; and Sebastian Cotofana, MD, PhD In this Original Article Dr. Mariana Calomeni and colleagues looked at the challenging tear trough region highlighting the importance of anatomic knowledge coupled with surgical skill to understand the underlying facial, muscular, and vascular anatomy and during filler injections. Based on their findings, they recommend the deep injection approach to the tear because of the intramuscular course of the angular vein. Body Contouring Seromas: How to Prevent and Treat Them: Our 20 Year Experience Authors: David M. Turer, MD, MS ; and Al Aly, MD This Special Topic contribution by Dr. David Turer and Dr. Al Aly highlights their approach to the prevention and treatment of seromas and includes a discussion of the evolution of their approach with technical details for body contouring such as abdominoplasty, belt lipectomy, brachioplasty, and thighplasty. Their novel approaches question traditional dictums, offering new strategies to prevent seromas. Aesthetic Genital Plastic Surgery Defining Ideal External Female Genital Anatomy via Crowdsourcing Analysis Authors: Gianfranco Frojo, MD ; Aurora M. Kareh, MD; Kenneth X. Probst, MA, CMI; Jeffrey D. Rector, PhD; Christina M. Plikaitis, MD; Herluf G. Lund Jr, MD, FACS; and Alexander Y. Lin, MD, MBA, FACS Commentary by: Christine A. Hamori, MD In this Original Article sponsored by ASERF Dr. Gianfranco Frojo and co-authors took a crowdsourcing approach to identifying the ideal characteristics of the female external genitalia and found that raters preferred a labia majora to labia minora width ratio of 3:1 with little preference on clitoral hood length. A Commentary by Dr. Christine Hamori puts this into perspective saying that men typically equate the ideal female vulva with pornographic images that are often manipulated and should override a woman’s primary goal: to reduce the length and protrusion of the labia minora.
