New Research on IUDs and Breast Cancer Risk

New research published in JAMA looked at nearly 160,000 women in Denmark ages 15-49: ~80,000 women using levonorgestrel (progesterone) IUDs (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena and Skyla) and 80,000 women who did not. The data showed that women using IUDs had a 40% higher chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer but the absolute increase was very low (14 cases per 10,000 women). There’s a lot we don’t know from this study: what stage/type of breast cancer, if people were going for breast cancer screening, if they were high risk etc. We should not stop using IUDs (which are very helpful and important for many) this is an important part of counseling and further highlights the importance of doing a breast cancer risk assessment.
