Interacting with my blue tongues (Northern and Tanimbar). Ping enjoys sleeping on the couch and Riley is looking for a snack. SOME ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS: AGE: Ping was born in 2007 and Riley was born in 2008. (January 2017 update: they're both fine!) SUBSTRATE: I have tried them all. Cypress mulch is the best. Holds humidity well, resists mold, absorbent. I tried the "bricks" of pulverized coconut husk for a while, but found that it will readily stick to and irritate their eyes. Avoid Carefresh (too dry), ReptiBark (not absorbent, not so good for burrowing), pine or cedar shavings (aromatic oils harmful to respiration). Many keepers use aspen shavings, but I think it sucks. Not absorbent or firm enough for them to get a foothold! TANK SIZE: Update: Both skinks now have 60x24x24 tanks from Showcase Cages. http://www.showcasecages.com/buy_onli... IN VIDEO: Riley - 36x18x18. Ping - 48x18x17 from GlassCages.com. Riley was small and not very active so the tank was alright for him at the time, but I would not recommend that size for an adult all of its life. 48x18 is pretty good but may end up feeling small for larger or more active skinks. This was the case for Ping, and now they both enjoy 10 square feet of floor space. FOOD: Blue tongues are omnivores. Mine enjoy a variety of foods. F/T mice, snails, silkworms, roaches, Wellness or Spot's Stew brand canned pet food, all sorts of squashes (summer and winter), collards, kale, mustard greens, dandelion greens, green beans, okra, mushroom, parsnip, snap peas, all sorts of berries, apple, other fruits as a treat. Repcal Green Label calcium (without D3 added) and Herptivite vitamin supplement. HEAT / LIGHTING: Simple incandescent flood bulbs in aluminum clamp lamps for heat. They are on a Herpstat II proportional thermostat to regulate basking temperature near 100 degrees. ReptiSun 10.0 fluorescent strip bulbs for UVB lighting. The Herpstat is a worthwhile investment that should not be overlooked. (Think about it -- overheating can be fatal.) WATER: Keep a clean shallow dish of water available at all times. "All that equipment is expensive!" Yes, it is. Get a job, then get a skink. :) Please read this care sheet for more information on blue tongue care: http://bluetongueskinks.net/care.htm
