It was premiered on August 21 of 2007, performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer. It was originally divided in four large movements of 45 minutes duration, but Adams revised the work to just three movements performed continuously in 25 minutes' length. The opera, and thus the symphony, focuses on how leading figures at Los Alamos dealt with the great stress and anxiety of preparing for the test of the first atomic bomb (the "Trinity" test). The work centres on key players in the Manhattan Project, especially Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves. It also features Kitty Oppenheimer, Robert's wife. The libretto was written from declassified U.S. government documents and communications among the scientists, government officials, and military personnel who were involved in the project. Doctor Atomic is similar in style to previous Adams operas Nixon in China and The Death of Klinghoffer, both of which explored the characters and personalities of figures who were involved in historical incidents, rather than a re-enactment of the events themselves. The first movement is a very short introduction as the overture to the opera, said by Adams to have been inspired by the music of Edgard Varèse. It opens in a very chaotic manner, with dissonant brass calls against strings and over the fateful beat of percussion. As if the music conjures a devastated post-nuclear landscape. A calmer section features more melodic phrases from the woods, a transition leads us to the next part. The second movement's music is extracted from Act Two's feverish tableaux that evoke the fierce electrical storm that lashed the test site in the hours before the bomb's detonation. The opening whirlwind describe the intense activity leading up to the test. The music grows more agitated and intense until reaching a massive climax. The voice of US Army General Leslie Groves can be heard in the trombone, during a calmer passage, berating both the scientists and his military subordinates. Other characters are also presented with other instruments. A lyrical passage offers us some comfort from the violent previous music, leading to a solitary trumpet solo. A brief corn dance of the local Tewa indians takes place, before another lyrical passage takes place, serving as well as a transition towards the last movement. The third movement's name "Trinity" references the name given to the Alamogordo test site by Oppenheimer himself, in an evocation to John Donne’s Divine Meditation "Batter my heart, three-person’d God", one of a set of nineteen deeply spiritual sonnets first published in 1633, two years after the great Jacobean poet’s death. In the opera, the physicist sings this poem in a moment of profound contemplation at the end of Act I, in music that makes explicit allusions to the tonal and rhetorical gestures of the early baroque. In its symphonic form, it opens with a dissonant and menacing introduction. The intense melody of the aria is performed by solo trumpet, confronted by the violent ostinatos of the beginning. A forceful and pulsating coda ends the whole work. Picture: Fragment of a poster of the film "Oppenheimer" (2023) by Cristopher Nolan.
