Hello and welcome to Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa! If you are sexually active and are not ready to become a parent, it is important to use birth control to protect yourself from pregnancy. For men, it’s simple: Use a condom or get a vasectomy), but for women, there are a multitude of birth control options. There are 3 main-types of birth control: Barrier Methods, Intrauterine Methods (or IUD), Hormonal Methods. Barrier methods are what we are most familiar with. These include products that block the sperm from getting to the cervix and usually include nonoxynol-9 spermicide. Show a diaphragm and how to use it. (Failure Rate 12%) Show a female condom and how to use it. (Failure Rate 21%) Discuss spermicides. Not useful in preventing STDs (Failure Rate 28%) Intrauterine Methods (IUD) is implanted by your gynecologist. Show an IUD and discuss benefits over barrier method. (Failure Rate 0.8%) Show a LNG IUD, and how it releases a small amount of progestin each day (0.2% Failure Rate) Hormone Methods - releases a combination of progestin and estrogen. Pros and Cons of hormones Multiple Delivery methods: patch, injections, implant, oral (aka “the pill”) How “emergency contraception” Plan B and regular contraception differ.
