Zoom-in to protester talking to police STORYLINE: Hungary's parliament on Tuesday elected Gordon Bajnai as prime minister. Bajnai replaces Ferenc Gyurcsany, who said last month he would resign and allow a new government to deal with Hungary's deepest economic crisis since the end of communism nearly 20 years ago. Bajnai needed the support of 193 lawmakers and received 204 votes in the 386-seat legislature, with most of the centre-right opposition either abstaining or not voting. "The role of this government won't be politics, it is a crisis-management government," Gyurcsany told parliament. Because of large external financing needs and a fluctuating currency, Hungary has been one of the countries in Eastern Europe hit hardest by the global economic crisis. Its economy is expected to shrink by around six percent this year and continue to erode, albeit at a smaller pace, in 2010. The Socialist minority government received support from the Alliance of Free Democrats, their former coalition partners, in getting Bajnai elected, but the Free Democrats will not be part of the new government. Speaking in parliament, the 41-year-old Bajnai said he would not seek to run for office when national elections are next held, most likely in April or May 2010. Bajnai, who was economic minister in Gyurcsany's Cabinet, said he accepted the Socialists' nomination to help solve Hungary's political crisis quickly and avoid early elections. "I don't want to mince words, I'm not here as an orator, but as a crisis manager, Bajnai told lawmakers. During Tuesday's parliamentary session, about 2,000 protesters gathered nearby demanding early elections. programme. Hungarian economy back on track would "hurt."
