In the largest display of force seen since disturbances began last week, riot police on horses and officers armed with flash bangs and rubber bullets swept the streets to disperse those who had defied the city’s 8pm to 6am curfew. Los Angeles officials said the measures were necessary to stop vandalism and looting, which had broken out the night before in the city’s central district. Hours before, Gavin Newsom, California’s Democratic governor, urged demonstrators to remain peaceful. Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in America’s second largest city have occurred daily since Friday, following a crackdown announced by President Trump. Speaking earlier on Tuesday, Trump described the protesters as “a foreign enemy” and vowed to “liberate” Los Angeles. The president ordered 4,000 National Guard reservists and some 700 US marines to be deployed in LA in defiance of the California governor, the city’s mayor and police department who said the move was unnecessary and inflammatory.
