Bikes are our happiest form of transportation – we love to bike, we go on vacation to bike – it’s joyful, meditative, healthy, relaxing, and free. Bikes also scale transit – they provide that crucial first mile/last mile connection – and in many cities, without it, transit cannot scale. But despite all this, when it comes to installing bike lanes, people fight them with the fire of 1000 suns – even people who love to bike. But if we can find our way through the anger and anxiety, bikes can unlock car-free living, which unlocks parking-free housing, which is the key to naturally occurring affordable housing. Bikes also unlock the dream of urbanists everywhere – a true functional 15 minute city. Imagine living in SoCal and never needing a car… walking or biking or triking along a street of neighborhood serving retail – to get groceries, run errands, or get to the Metro. More money in your pocket, and better health and mental health. The good news is: all the evidence says it is possible – if we can just take a leap of faith – and build truly safe bike infrastructure. And as appealing as this may sound – we also need to do it for climate. To meet our climate goals for transportation emissions reduction, we need to reduce the number of cars – meaning walking and transit – but transit needs bikes. So it turns out that the key to addressing three of our biggest challenges – climate, traffic and housing – is the lowly bike. TransitCon 2023 - April 30th, 2023 transitcon.org
