The Marikana tragedy has been touted as the fourth largest massacre to have occurred in the history of this nation. What makes this a greater tragedy is the fact that it happened 18 years into our democracy; in fact it is the only such massacre to have occurred post-apartheid. As a society we need to ask ourselves real questions about what this level of brutality says about our society that is still so unequal, so angry and so willing to respond violently. We were once the poster-child, the perfect model for what the ideal Constitutional democracy is. Now however, the world looks at us in a very different light as serious questions are raised about the response at Marikana.
