Flying over Brandon Hill Quarry, West of Leicester in the UK shows its vast scale and magnitude. This quarry has been running for centuries and is thought to have helped build the UK roadmap we know today. This video was filmed on two batteries with 45 minutes of footage. The drone used was the DJI Phantom 4. You can buy the DJI Phantom 4 drone here: https://amzn.to/2wK7z7L Huge chunks of granite are mined from deposits in the earth for the specific purpose of producing granite slabs. Chunks are either cut out of granite deposits or blasted out using explosives. These deposits usually store granite which is used for buildings, bridges, paving, floors and other common uses. A chunk of granite will be extracted from a deposit site and cut into a large block. That block is then placed in a slicing machine that uses a special diamond-tipped blade to cut through the granite. Granite blocks that have been mined are most often cut into ¾ -inch or 1 ¼-inch slabs. Granite slabs are traditionally cut into sections 112 inches long by 65 inches wide. It is thought that the quarry only grew to large scale once the establishment of the grand central railway. The quarry doubled in size in 1902 which at the time was deemed large and spectacular. A little piece of history on Bardon Hill Quarry: The earliest known printed reference to quarrying at Bardon Hill seems to be in the topographer William Burton’s 1622 Description of Leicester Shire. The commercial development of Bardon Hill stone, however, was made possible by the opening in 1833 of the Leicester and Swannington Railway, the first steam-worked public railway conveying both passengers and freight in the Midlands. The success of the line was largely due to the initiative and enterprise of the Ellis family of Beaumont Leys, who were active quakers. George and Robert Stephenson were consultants in building the railway and at its opening the first train carried banners promising cheap coal and granite, warm hearths and good roads. The granite for the good roads was to come from Bardon and other local quarries.
