There are three main types of ADHD. It can either be in the form of hyperactivity, inattentiveness, or a mix of the two. Although these types are pretty self-explanatory, we can still elaborate further on them for a clearer idea. And regarding the fact that it is more common in children and teenagers, we will take an example of how a child suffering from either type of ADHD is likely to behave. Let's begin with hyperactivity. Children with hyperactive ADHD tend to be just what you would expect – hyperactive. A child might exhibit fidgeting behavior. This may include constantly tapping their feet or hands. Some might even be squirmish if they are sat down anywhere. These kids are often the ones that give their teachers at school a hard time, but they can’t really be blamed for it since they themselves have a hard time complying with any commands to sit quietly in one place. These kids want to constantly keep moving, so unless they are made to sit somewhere, they will never rest in one place. During conversations, they will likely interrupt, talk fast, and even talk too often. These are not necessarily bad behaviors, but they can still give you a clearer idea of what the child has at the back end that is causing this erratic behavior. Often, these children may behave inappropriately in certain situations, doing wild tasks even if the circumstances demand a rather disciplined and serious behavior. Although these symptoms seem pretty serious, they are not necessarily harmful. But, parents should still be on the watch since a child’s already innocent judgement would couple with such behavior to be potentially harmful to the child. At the same time, scolding such children or reprimanding them in any manner only does more harm. Understand that the child is not doing this out of choice. Rather, it is an incontrollable scenario for them and they do not know any better. If you notice these types of behaviors in your child, do not panic. Instead, try to observe them better and finally seek help. As for the treatment, more on that later in the video. Secondly, we have children that suffer from the inattentive form of ADHD. Previously known as ADD. This situation is also pretty self-explanatory. Children with the inattentive type of ADHD tend to seem “slower”. In reality these children often have a lot of trouble focusing on any particular task that they have been asked to perform. You might notice this when children form repeated silly mistakes in their homework or other study-related tasks. But it is not just at school. These children often have the same issues in fun activities where other children might perform relatively better too. This includes inattentiveness during playtime. These children tend to day dream and be in their own world most of the day. Often, these children will also have issues in keeping themselves organized and tidy too. If your kids lose their toys, stationary, or other items too often, they almost certainly suffer from the inattentive type of ADHD. Again, the last thing that is helpful is being harsh with them. Remember, these children get distracted enough already, so you reprimanding them for their perceived carelessness will only worsen their situation. Of course, this is also not a particularly worrisome condition, but it is always better to have your child diagnosed and given the right care to allow them to live their best life. And lastly, we have a type of ADHD that is a mix of hyperactivity and inattentiveness. For this, you might notice symptoms of both the previously mentioned type in your children. This is somewhat hard to diagnose since you might mistake your child for being one of the previous mentioned types if you are only looking for a particular set of symptoms. So, instead, simply focus on observing their natural behavior. You might find your child to be overenthusiastic about certain things whilst being unable to do something different that might seem like a fairly simple task. But before you go ahead and conclude that your child suffers from any form of ADHD, realize that diagnosing a child, or even an adult, with ADHD is not a simple task. It is very normal and natural for people, especially children to get inattentive after a certain set of tasks. Children, particularly preschoolers, already have a limited attention span. At the same time, they are not fully socially trained to understand certain situations and may often have naïve excitements, even in circumstances where it might seem inappropriate. So, only take notice when you realize that these symptoms are a bit too frequent, intense, and disruptive. Disclaimer: This video is for educational purposes.
