This is our film that was submitted for the Geocaching International Film Festival (GIFF) 2023, and we were thrilled to be selected as one of 18 finalists for the final reel. The full backstory to this video is below. *************************************************************************** GEOCARE - THE BACKSTORY. Chook's background is as a Registered Nurse, spending the last decade working in community based and aged care settings. Her passion is to facilitate and support people to maintain meaningful daily activities and live as independently as possible whilst managing their health issues. This is known as the Montessori Model of Dementia and Aged Care (https://montessorifordementia.com.au/). Inspired by watching the earliest GIFFs (Geocaching International Film Festivals), she came up with the idea of making a movie based on this passion, sprinkled with your typical aged care and geocaching gags. Due to her total lack of filming experience (including using the video feature on her phone), this idea simmered for years until encouraged by the staff and management at her workplace (Beaufort & Skipton Health Service) to give it a go. She was offered the use of the Skipton Day Centre for location, access to the store of wheelie walkers and equipment, and they even let the garden temporarily overgrow for the cache hide. Realising this offer meant that it was now or never, but still not quite sure where to start, Chook reached out to experienced geocacher and GIFF film maker Seemyshell, who gave terrific support and explained how it wasn't essential to have the latest camera equipment, but it could be filmed with phones and edited with simple free editing software. So the research began into how to make a movie, the storyboard was drawn up, the location shots were practiced, the props and costumes made, the canvassing for the cast commenced, and the Day Centre was booked for New Years Eve 2022. The day turned out to be really hot, with Chook running an obligatory Covid19 testing clinic in the carpark followed by the 2 hour timeslot in which all filming had to be completed. It was a tough slog but the cast and crew were amazing, working really hard and becoming instant superstars. A huge thankyou to all of you. Editing took the best of a whole month afterwards. All for 3 minutes and 28 seconds of movie. Given the seal of approval by the Health Service, it was submitted for GIFF 2023. There were no expectations that the movie would even make it to the final reel, so plans were made to turn it into a Puzzle Geocache regardless. The day the notification came through that it was a GIFF Finalist is one that will never be forgotten (and Chunk's ears are still recovering). The Film Festival itself, held in November 2023, incorporated over 540 events worldwide. The subsequent response to Geocare was amazing, if not a tad overwhelming, but a wonderful ride. To top it all off, this film won the People's Choice Award for the Festival. The most rewarding thing, however, is knowing that people around the world have enjoyed the film. Thank you to all involved. Jo (Chook) from chooknchunk
