In this video you can hear my rendition of Dietrich Buxtehude's “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” played on my Hauptwerk organ. I have chosen to use the sample set of Noordbroek, created by Sonus Paradisi. The registration for this piece is the flute 8' in the Positif and the flute 8 with the Quint 2⅔ in the great. I decided to add the tremulant to give that calm and soothing feel. Nun komm der Heiden Heiland is one of the most well-known hymn connected to the advent time. Bach famously made a lot of chorale preludes as well as a cantata on the melody, so it must really have been a very loved tune at the time. The BuxWV 221 version is a very simple cantus firmus chorale prelude with the melody in the soprano written in G minor. Buxtehude also partly used the start of the melody in the bass as well. The mood of the piece is man awaiting the Lord, so there is no ecstatic feeling so far. Just as with Bach's version the mood is mostly longing for the coming of Christ.
