Brandon Hines grew up in rural Georgia as a sporty, tough boy. He experienced rigid gender roles in his family and couldn’t conceptualize that he was anything but straight due to his masculinity. One evening while sheltering with his cousins during a bad storm, Brandon saw his first episode of the sitcom Will & Grace. For the first time he saw different types of gay men represented on screen and his whole world changed. “The feeling that came over me was just like I had just been reborn again.” Brandon continued to sneak episodes of Will & Grace at his uncle's house as often as he could. The show inspired him to work hard in school so that one day he could move out of his small town and create a life where he could live authentically. Eventually Brandon moved to Austin, Texas, and now plays in a flag football league with other out-and-proud athletic guys.
