John Uribe, M.D., is a dual Board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Doctors Hospital, specializing in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and minimally invasive surgical procedures for degenerative conditions of the knee, shoulder and elbow. Dr. Uribe is the team physician for the Florida Panthers hockey team, and has served as a team physician for the Florida Marlins and Miami Dolphins. He was recently appointed chairman of the Department of Orthopedics for Florida International University's Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and is a founding member of the UHZ Sports Medicine Institute (uhzmi.com). He was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army and served as chief of orthopedics at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. His research interests include minimally invasive resurfacing techniques of the knee and shoulder, as well as ligament and tendon restoration. A member of multiple professional organizations and societies, he is well-published and lectures extensively in the U.S. and abroad. I've been very fortunate to take care of some of the best athletes in the world, and it really has been an honor because you're put in a situation where they're putting their livelihood in your hands. [Various football jerseys] [John Uribe, M.D.] But I think the one that sticks out the most was Willis McGahee, only because it occurred at the last game of his career as a college player. The fact that he was able to be drafted in the first round even though the draft took place before he was even essentially off of crutches, and then the fact that he's still playing in the league 11 years later is very remarkable. [John Uribe, M.D.] Most of my patients are not athletes. The majority are just normal people that may play an occasional recreational sport. Our job, I think, and our key contribution is to get these people back to their normal life pain-free. One of the good things about having a reputation as a surgeon and as a program is that they come in confident that they're getting the best care. [John Uribe, M.D.] He was 12 or 13 when he came. He had been in a car accident and had dislocated his knee. This kid was an incredibly positive kid. I mean, we had pins in his leg that we had used to try and hold the knee in a reduced position. Then, after a few years, I just lost touch. It was about four or five years ago, his mother came in with a knee problem, and she had this kid in the room with them. So then she asked me if I remembered her son with a dislocated knee, and I said, "That was your son, the little kid with the... She said, "Oh yeah." And she said, "That's him right here." He was almost crying. I mean, he was a big strapping kid over six feet. He said, "Look, I've played soccer. I surf." The mother, she just said, "You gave my son his life because that's all he loves, his sport, and he would have been nothing without his sport.
