ƒ takes place in 60s Japan. The tortured protagonist is a high school student called Shimizu Hinako, who lives in a village called Ebisugaoka with her parents. After a bust up with her folks she heads into town to meet with her friends, and shortly after linking up with them the town is overrun by monsters as well as being engulfed in fog and red flowers. The kids are separated so Hinako looks to meet up with them as soon as she can. Throughout the game, tension headaches get the best of Hinako and she is transported to the otherworld - where she is guided by Fox Mask, a character (who wears a fox mask) who wishes to marry her despite warnings from her childhood doll. To say any more would be spoiler territory, but in my opinion the story is phenomenally written, and among the strongest in the series. The developers set out to "find the terror in beauty" and "if something is too perfect then it can become unsettling" - this is evident in some of it's monsters, the loculation, the music and the themes of the narrative. Hinako's story was one so compelling that it was not a chore to pay it through multiple times. The wonderful sound design and masterful score (Akira Yamaoka makes an appearance, and one or two tracks even featuring some of the OG Silent Hill motifs) drew me in and I'd love to own the soundtrack on physical media, but sadly copyright law around a century old Japanese folk song has seen that impossible. Visually, the game is gorgeous too. Instead of the concrete or rusted steel and fencing of the Midwest American town of Silent Hill, we are treated to the wood, stone and plant life of rural Japan. The otherworld is full of dimly lit temple sturctures full of statues and idols. The monsters differ in the way that they are often well crafted and designed puppets, scarecrows or ugly organisms covered by spider lilies. The game does on occasion suffer due to Unreal Engine's ongoing framerate nonsense when the scenes are overcrowded (there's a lot going on) and this is a real shame - even cut scenes seem to be 30fps to avoid this (I'm guessing). Silent Hill is known for it's difficult puzzles, and can occasionally seem unreasonable. This one had me reaching for the guides a couple of times, as I found the solution text to be sometimes misleading and lead me to question whether this was intentionally so. Silent Hill is also known for occasionally clunky and on occasion, boring combat - which has been a bone of contention for some of the less skilled community members. Firearms have been removed in favour of close quarters melee and parrying mechanics. Similar to something like Dark Souls, stamina management and timing are key - and the game will punish you for wreckless attacking. Throughout the game you can upgrade your character and create builds with omamori charms that have their own boons to make things easier - a necessity for harder difficulties. As a franchise, Silent Hill is one of the standard bearers for survival horror, but what sets it apart from others is the way that it handles psychological horror. The series has spent the best part of 30 years creating unsettling and frightening atmospheres, that make most instalments engaging and uncomfortable to play. Each game usually takes place in the "real" world setting with the town engulfed in mist, and mostly deserted - and shifts to the "otherworld", an ugly and hellish variation of the location that the player is exploring. The protagonist is often tortured by the area that they are summoned to - both by distorted perceptions and the monstrous beings that pursue the characters. And there are often multiple endings that will help you in understanding the whole story. With all that in mind, next time somebody tries to tell you that Silent Hill ƒ is not a Silent Hill game due to it's locale, then you can turn around and say that it is one of the strongest Silent Hill games - and I will die on that [silent] hill. #silenthill #silenthillf #konami #PS5 #twitch #gameplay #nukeboxharris #fullplaythrough Broadcasted live on Twitch -- Watch live at / nukeboxharris
