The problem with that advice is that when you’re stressed, the breaths you take tend to be shallow and centered in your chest. So even if you think you’re taking deep breaths, you’re probably taking shallow, chest-breaths that actually make your stress worse. If, however, you have been learning how to take deep, abdominal breaths as part of your mindfulness practice, then you can actually take the kind of deep breaths that will help you work through a feeling of anxiety.
