(10 May 2000) English/Nat A computer college in the Philippines is summoning one of its students in the hope that he can shed light into the "I Love You" virus which has caused havoc on computers around the world. Officials at the A-M-A Computer School in the capital Manila noticed the similarity between the love bug and a thesis proposal submitted by student Onel de Guzman. The proposal was rejected by the school. Officials of the A-M-A Computer College are helping the authorities in the search for the person behind the "I Love You" virus which attacked computers around the world last week. The A-M-A received a list of names from the National Bureau of Investigations (N-B-I), and saw that in the list was a student who submitted a thesis proposal which would deal with stealing passwords from e-mail users. A-M-A Senior Vice President Karim Bangcola said that the school had rejected the thesis proposal submitted by student Onel de Guzman because its subject dealt with stealing passwords through e-mail. Bangcola said the characteristics of the love bug has many similarities with de Guzman's proposal. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The thesis proposal, his programme, will be written in a windows environment, the "I Love You" bug is also written on a windows environment. It's a worm, the "L Love You bug" is a worm", his proposal is also a worm because it gets though the system. It's not like a stand-alone virus, it gets into the server and propagates itself by its own. And then of course, the fact that it steals passwords from the server or the infected computer is also another similarity." SUPER CAPTION: Karim Bangcola, Senior Vice President, AMA However, Bangcola stresses that this does not necessarily mean that de Guzman is the man. He says it will be very difficult to pin someone down, but adds that the possibility of it coming from the Philippines is very strong. SOUNDBITE: (English) "From where we sit, from the data that we have, it shows clearly that the signs of the virus, its symptoms, is very related to what our student may have done. It is possible that the virus really came from Manila." SUPER CAPTION: Karim Bangcola, Senior Vice President, AMA School officials say that de Guzman was an average student, but he showed very good skills in one particular subject. SOUNDBITE: (English) "This student has rather average grades in other subjects, a grade of 3 or 2.5 which is average passing, but he has some good grades for computer science, like the very challenging subject of assembly language, he has a Flat 1 which is a very high grade." SUPER CAPTION: Manuel F. Abad, Executive Vice President, AMA A-M-A has sent out a summons for de Guzman to report to the school, but they haven't yet heard from him. It appears that de Guzman is now missing. His sister is also being sought for questioning. She's the live-in girlfriend of a bank employee arrested on Monday initially as the main suspect behind the virus. Twenty-eight-year-old Reonel Ramones virus was later released while Philippines and U-S investigators examine evidence seized at his apartment. Ramones has denied any involvement in the virus.
