In this film I show you the worldwide unique 9 locks of Fonseranes on the Canal du midi near Beziers from the 17th century which were planned and built by Pierre-Paul Riquet, the builder of the complete Canal du midi. The staircase of locks in the Canal du Midi is the most visited sight in Beziers and is classified as Monument historique. Today, 6 chambers are still in use one after the other and overcome a height of 13.6m. Passing the locks takes a little longer than an hour and is for every houseboat fan the crowning glory of the vacation, you feel a bit chosen when you maneuver your houseboat through the locks in front of all the tourists at the edge behind the barrier. The remaining chambers were no longer needed because in the 19th century it was decided to build a water bridge for the Canal du midi over the Orb because it had a very irregular water level. You can also see this bridge in this video. On the drone footage you can also see a strange construction right below the locks - this is a ship lift that was built in 1983 for the larger cargo ships. However, because of its susceptibility to errors and because of the discontinuation of cargo shipping on the Canal du Midi, the water wedge lift was taken out of operation in 2001. I could not get closer with the drone because the whole region in front of the drone is a no-fly zone. The Canal du midi - with a length of 240km it connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean Sea at Sète and was completed in 1681. It brought progress and the way to modernity to the region and was important for the transport of people and goods until the end of the 20th century. At peak times, 110 million ton kilometers of goods were transported. A technical masterpiece that the master builder Pierre-Paul Riquet had built here with many obstacles and problems after the French King Louis XIV had approved the project in 1666. With its 98 lock basins the canal overcomes Together with the Canal de Garonne, it provides a navigable link from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, avoiding the arduous journey around the Iberian Peninsula. Already the Romans thought about building a canal, in the Middle Ages even Leonardo da Vinci was involved in the planning work, but they failed to supply the canal with water.
