Ask The Imam with Shaykh Ibrahim & Shaykh Waleed Basyouni In this episode of Ask The Imam, the imams address an important and often misunderstood question: are nonprofit organizations eligible to receive zakat? The discussion begins by clarifying that zakat is not defined only by the amount given, but by who is eligible to receive it, as outlined by Allah ﷻ in the Qur’an. Among the eight categories of zakat recipients is fī sabīlillāh. Classical scholars traditionally interpreted this category as funding military defense during early Islamic history. However, contemporary scholars have revisited this category in light of modern realities. The scholars explain that since modern states now fund armies through structured government budgets, many jurists have broadened the meaning of fī sabīlillāh to include da‘wah, education, defending Islam intellectually, protecting community rights, and supporting beneficial causes that serve the public good. This includes nonprofit organizations whose primary mission is Islamic education, outreach, civil advocacy, and social justice. They further clarify that zakat should not be given simply to maintain buildings or facilities, but to support active programs such as education, public representation of Islam, community defense, and assistance to the vulnerable. This position is widely supported by contemporary fiqh councils and scholars across the Muslim world. At the same time, the scholars stress balance and responsibility. Zakat should be distributed across multiple categories, ensuring that the poor, those in debt, and individuals in hardship are not neglected in favor of institutions alone. Wise zakat distribution serves both immediate needs and long-term community strength. The key takeaway is strategic and principled: nonprofit organizations may be zakat-eligible when their work clearly aligns with the objectives of zakat and serves the broader welfare of the community.
