(4 Mar 1995) English/Nat In South Africa, repeated sightings of a snow white bush buck antelope on a farm in KwaZulu/Natal have stumped the experts. No experts have ever seen such an animal, nor are they able to explain the reason behind its unusual colouring. This is farm land in the Umzimkulu Valley where most of the countryside has been tamed and wild animals are rare. However, a small, snow-white antelope has recently been spotted in the nearby forests - a phenomenon that defies explanation. This farm worker is one of the lucky few who has seen the ghostly animal. SOUNDBITE: It's white, white, white...no other colour. It's all white. SUPER CAPTION: Tamsin Hlabe, Farm Labourer If it were not for these still photographs of the timid beast, witnesses might be accused of imagining things. SOUNDBITE: He is scared...he is scared - more than other buck. His foot - it's looking different than another buck - it's not the same, same, same foot. SUPER CAPTION: Tamsin Hlabe, Farm labourer The Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) has done some research on the sightings, but has not come up with any conclusive finding on its unique colouring. Fiona Whitsitt, of the Centre, maintains that this white antelope, while a curiosity, is mostly likely a chance happening. SOUNDBITE: I've never seen an albino bush buck. I think it's an albino bush buck. We'd have to get closer to it to examine the eye pigment which should be red if it's a true albino. As far as I do know there's no difference in behaviour and habits, feeding and breeding and it's a throwback type of thing where it doesn't run in the family that an albino mouse, say, will have all the albino mice. It's just a one-off thing - it's just a lack of skin pigment. SUPER CAPTION: Fiona Whitsitt, Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife Whatever the experts say, this little animal is intent on keeping its secret to itself. It will be the patient and the curious who track it down again and come up with an explanation.
