Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to Wisesa Wiwaha :) Sugeng Siyang! Nami kulå Andy. Kadhos Pundi Kabaripun ? Good day! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Javanese language. LANGUAGE: The Javanese language is an Austronesian language primarily spoken by the Javanese people in the central and eastern regions of Java, Indonesia, with over 68 million native speakers, making it the largest Austronesian language by number of ethnic speakers. It has several regional dialects, with Central, Eastern, and Western Javanese being the main ones. The language is closely related to neighboring languages like Sundanese, Madurese, and Balinese. While most Javanese speakers also use Indonesian for official and interethnic communication, Javanese itself is notable for its complex system of speech levels or registers, which reflect social context and relationships. These registers include Ngoko (informal, used among equals or by addressing those of lower status), Madya (intermediate, for neutral or uncertain situations), and Krama (formal, used to show respect or in official settings). Traditionally written in the Javanese script, a descendant of the ancient Kawi script, the language has a rich literary history dating back to the 10th century. Standard Javanese, based on the Central Javanese dialect, emerged from the courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta and serves as the foundation for modern Javanese writing. PEOPLE: The Javanese people are an Austronesian ethnic group native to the central and eastern regions of Java, Indonesia, and are the largest ethnic group in both Indonesia and Southeast Asia, with over 100 million people. Historically, they have played a dominant role in shaping the social, political, and cultural landscape of the region. Javanese civilization has been deeply influenced by a blend of indigenous animist traditions (Kejawen) and Indian Hindu-Buddhist culture, which is evident in their art, architecture, and traditions. The ancient Javanese kingdoms, such as Singhasari and Majapahit, were powerful maritime empires that extended their influence across much of Southeast Asia. The Javanese are renowned for their cultural heritage, including the construction of monumental religious sites like Borobudur and Prambanan, which are among the largest and most significant temples in the world. Their cultural influence extends beyond Indonesia, impacting much of Southeast Asia through language, traditions, and artistic expressions. CULTURE: Javanese culture is a rich and diverse tapestry of traditions, arts, and customs that reflect the island of Java's long history and cultural synthesis. Rooted in a blend of indigenous animist beliefs (Kejawen), Hindu-Buddhist influences, and Islamic traditions, Javanese culture is renowned for its sophisticated art forms, rituals, and social practices. Central to Javanese culture are its performing arts, such as wayang kulit (shadow puppetry) and gamelan music, both recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Traditional crafts like batik (a wax-resist dyeing technique) and the forging of the keris (a ceremonial dagger) are also UNESCO-listed, showcasing the Javanese mastery of artistry and symbolism. Other notable cultural elements include Reog Ponorogo, a vibrant dance drama, kebaya (traditional dress), jamu (herbal medicine), and unique Javanese cuisine, which blends sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. Festivals, rituals, and traditional Javanese houses, with their distinctive architectural styles, further highlight the culture's deep connection to spirituality, community, and nature. Javanese culture has not only shaped Indonesia's national identity but has also gained global recognition for its artistic and cultural significance.
