"A cathedral is god's anteroom. It's halfway to heaven. And the light, the light is everything." Pillars of the Earth is a brilliant tv series, the book is regarded as a masterpiece as well. It is a modern classic. I am definitely going to read it at some point in life. I watched this how way back in 2010 when it first aired, the only actors who were regarded as famous back then were Matthew Macfayden and Rufus Sewell. Eddie and Hayley gave amazing performances in these breakthrough roles. Tom Builder is a character who is interesting to watch and listen to. It's people like him that built these spectacles that have lasted generations and have us, historians and archaeologists, fascinated. Learning is a theme in the show which I really like. The character's death was very sad and shocking, but, I bet it was common for the master builder's to never see their work finished. Kingsbridge Cathedral is loosely based on Wells Cathedral (shown at the end of this vid) and Salisbury cathedral. I haven't been to either in the south, but I have been to Lincoln cathedral and York Minster, which are magnificent too. There's something about this medieval architecture, beautiful whilst instilled with so much thought and meaning and hope. A video on Jack Jackson will surely be next!
