In Australia the reliance on strength as the only variable to be trained in the belief that “bigger is better” is well and truly overused. And with AFL Football this is abused the most. An over reliance on strength training "to get big," and the abuse of cardio vascular exercise in pre-season training ruins careers of potential champions. It does not have to be this way, better education and understanding of what your body requires for the sport you play is how to get the most out of training. This video gives you just one simple idea on how to use conditioning to enhance the key aspects specific to your game. A well designed Sports Training program will include exercises to develop automatic perfect patterns of movement. The degree of difficulty will vary for each one depending on your technique and ability to execute these movements correctly. The objective is to learn these movements so well that you can start to combine movements together, (eg Squat with a push), and also be able to move at high speed with coordination, balance and posture. The more movements you combine the harder the exercise becomes so make sure you program method is simplified if you use complicated movements. For the program to be fully functional you must be standing and using almost every muscle from little toe to little finger! This is why body building techniques, machine training and even Pilates are not very functional. They can still serve a purpose to assist in gaining strength in weaker are-as to assist the functional movement, but they are not functional for life or sports. As you can imagine technique is everything so you must keep your program methods very simple in the early stages to allow you time to perfect the techniques. Over time once you have become a master at the movements you can begin to use some advanced methods to develop abilities like Power, Speed, Agility. But make sure you technique is right first.
