@tcross_md and I discuss subchorionic hemorrhage: •recurrent subchorionic hemorrhage •classification of subchorionic hemorrhage as small, medium and large •how a subchorionic hemorrhage can lead to problems later in pregnancy •acute vs chronic abruption •subchorionic hemorrhage with and without bleeding Subchorionic hematoma/hemorrhage is thought to result from partial detachment of the chorionic membranes from the uterine wall, in contrast to abruption, which is due to detachment of the placenta from the uterine wall. Patients are asymptomatic or experience light vaginal bleeding. In contrast to abruption, abdominal pain is typically absent, a minority of patients experience cramping or contractions, and the diagnosis is usually made before rather than after 20 weeks of gestation. The diagnosis is based on ultrasound findings of a hypoechoic or anechoic crescent-shape area behind the fetal membranes, which may also elevate the edge of the placenta.
