Amber and copal are both fossilized tree resins (NOT SAP) that have been found all over the world. The main difference is age, amber takes at least 100,000 years to form under our current understanding. Amber has not only mineralized but has polymers in it and those polymers forming are the simple distinction between amber and copal. Tree resin that is relatively new and hasn't had time for those polymers to form is called copal. Copal is soft and relatively unstable compared to amber but it is still beautiful. Both have been found with a variety of animal life trapped inside of them. Fun fact, the irony of the mosquito that was used in the amber (rather copal piece) that you see in the first Jurassic Park movie is that the mosquito in that fossil is the only variety that is not a blood sucker! Whoops! Amber is fossilized tree resin, but it takes a lot more than just that to be considered amber. The fossilized resin also has to go through a long process of polymerization, where complex polymers form in it's structure, replacing more volatile components. This can take wayward of 100,000 years. For clarity, technically amber is not a mineral since it is organic in origin. #gems #crystals #amber #nature #science #mining
