#boxing #slugfest #timwitherspoon #raymercer #mercervswitherspoo #terribletim #merciless #legends Why not try watch some boxing highlights here mate ?? Date: April 15, 2019 Author: James 0 Comments Two-time former heavyweight champion of the world “Terrible” Tim Witherspoon (45-4) challenged former WBO heavyweight champion of the world “Merciless” Ray Mercer (23-4-1). Andrew Golota (28-1) challenged two-time former heavyweight champion of the world Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe (38-1). Date: 14 December 1996 Venue: Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, NJ, USA Referee: Tony Perez (Mercer-Witherspoon); Eddie Cotton (Bowe-Golota) On the undercard, a must-win fight for two big name contenders. Mercer was now on a run of three fights without a win, and despite performing well against Holyfield and Lewis, he desperately needed to beat former champion Witherspoon to stay in contention for a title shot. Almost ten years to the day since he lost his WBA world title to James Smith, Witherspoon faced arguably his toughest opponent since then at the age of nearly 39. In his decade in the relative wilderness, he had won 20 of his 21 fights, rising from 25-3 to 45-4, with his only defeat coming to Everett Martin on a split decision in 1992. This remarkable run had kept him in and around The Ring‘s top 10 heavyweights, but a long series of legal wranglings with Don King, two years out of boxing between 1992 and 1994, and what was generally a run of wins over mediocre opponents meant he had drifted from the top end of most rankings. However, that seemed on the cusp of changing with his fifth-round TKO win over Jorge Luis Gonzalez on the undercard of Mercer’s last fight against Lewis. A win over Mercer could catapult him back into contention for a title once again. Mercer, as had often been the case, started slowly, being outboxed by Witherspoon for the first three rounds. But the fight ignited in the fourth, with Mercer landing some huge counter-punches in an attempt to unsettle and disrupt Witherspoon’s incessant jabbing. Both men began landing hard shots with remarkable accuracy as the fight descended into a classic slugfest, between two durable fighters with granite chins. In the end, the pair battled on the course of the ten rounds relatively evenly matched, with Witherspoon landing more punches, a much higher percentage of punches, more powershots and generally doing enough on most observers’ scorecards to win. However, in a major shock, Mercer was not only awarded the win, but a very comfortable one at that across the three scorecards. Witherspoon was left stunned in the middle of the ring, while Mercer was elated at having a judges’ decision finally go in his favour after his two previous defeats. While the fight had proven to be great entertainment for viewers at home and boosted the stock of both boxers in the short term, it ultimately proved to be damaging for both beyond that. Witherspoon was out of action for nearly a year, and despite a winning return, he went on to lose five bouts in a row between December 1997 and June 1999, essentially ending any chance of returning to the elite – his last fight came in 2003, after which he retired with a 55-13-1 record. Mercer was absent from the ring for over a year with a neck injury, then shortly after his return, he contracted hepatitis B and was out of action again. By the time of his full-time comeback in February 2001, he had fought only twice in the four years since the Witherspoon fight. The heavyweight landscape was set to change dramatically in that time. Judges’ scorecards: 97-93 Mercer, 97-93 Mercer, 97-91 Mercer Winner: Ray Mercer (by unanimous decision)
