In the 17th century, a man from inland Portugal dared to cross the Himalayas into the unknown. Father António de Andrade was the first European to enter Tibet, where he founded a Christian mission in the distant kingdom of Guge. His life, marked by Jesuit rigour, exploratory courage and a tragic end in Goa, is one of the most extraordinary and little-known in the History of Portugal. In this new video from the ‘Unknown Stories’ series, we revisit the main episodes of his life: from his youth in Portugal to the founding of the Tsaparang mission, including his education in Lisbon, his presence at the Mughal court and the dangers of crossing the ‘roof of the world’. Illustrated with historical images recreated with the utmost accuracy, this video is a tribute to one of the greatest Portuguese missionary explorers. The research is based on academic sources and letters written by Andrade himself between 1624 and 1628, preserved in several languages. English subtitles are available. Filmed, edited, narrated and written by Carlos de Figueiredo. #AntonioDeAndrade #FirstEuropeanInTibet #JesuitHistory #PortugueseExplorers #TibetanHistory #tibet #ageofexploration CHAPTERS 0:00 - Introduction 1:18 - Title Card 1:30 - Origins and Jesuit Training 2:35 - Departure for India and Mission in the Mughal Empire 4:31 - The Epic Journey to Tibet (1624) 7:52 - Mission in the Kingdom of Guge (1625–1630) 10:23 - Final Years in Goa and Mysterious Death 13:46 - Legacy and Historical Significance
