Now for a gorgeous little village and civil parish on the edge of the Peak District in North East Derbyshire. The penultimate parish no less in this district for us! The name means "raised pasture-land" and is of Norse and Anglo-Saxon origin. Viking influences are also evident with many road names suffixed by "gate", the old Norse word for "way". It is well known for a regular farmers and artisan market held in the main village on various dates throughout the year although no markets have been held since December 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The markets are normally situated either at the Angel Inn pub or just next door at St. Swithin's Church Hall. The parish includes a number of farming hamlets such as Millthorpe situated in the Cordwell Valley and has a number of narrow, tight, often windy lanes both within the main village and within the smaller hamlets, most of which are unsuitable for HGVs Robert Murray Gilchrist, author of regional interest books about the Peak District, lived and died at Cartledge Hall and is buried in the parish churchyard. G.H.B.
